How fast do you type?
Thirty or sixty seconds, one original passage, your words a minute and your accuracy. Then see what talking instead would save you.
Preparing your passage…
Click the box above and start typing. The clock starts on your first key.
Pick 30 or 60 seconds
Both use the same kind of passage: ordinary sentences, written for this test, not copied from anywhere.
Type it as it shows
Click the box and start typing. The clock starts on your first key, backspace fixes a mistake, and pasting is switched off.
Get your WPM and accuracy
Gross and net words a minute, and how much of what you typed was correct, worked out the standard way below.
The standard maths, in full.
Nothing hidden. It’s the same method most typing tests use, so your result means what you’d expect it to.
- Gross WPM
- characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutes
- Every character you type, spaces included, divided by 5, divided by the minutes you typed for. Five characters is the standard length of a “word” in a typing test.
- Net WPM
- gross − (errors ÷ minutes)
- Your gross WPM, minus one word for every character still wrong when the clock hit zero. This is the number we show as your speed.
- Accuracy
- correct ÷ typed
- The share of typed characters that were correct when time ran out. Fix a mistake with backspace before the clock stops and it never counts against you.
For comparison, talking averages about 150 words a minute, the typical pace of conversation (National Center for Voice and Speech). The home page calculator uses 45 words a minute as a typical typing speed, from Aalto University’s 2018 study of 168,000 typists. Your own number, from the test above, is worth more than either.
Now you know your speed.
Voktik writes what you say, punctuated and without the ums, wherever you’re working. Free to try, with 2,000 words a week before you’d need to pay anything.
About the test.
How is words-a-minute worked out?
We count every character you type, including spaces, and divide by 5, which is the standard length of a word in a typing test. Divide that by the minutes you typed for and you get your gross WPM. Net WPM takes off one word for every character still wrong when the time ran out, which is the number most typing tests report as your speed.
What counts as an error?
Any character that's still wrong in what you typed when the test ends. If you catch a mistake and backspace over it before time's up, it doesn't count against you. Only what's left on screen at the end does.
Can I paste text in?
No. Pasting is switched off, the same as on any proper typing test, because the point is to measure your own typing.
Does anything I type get sent anywhere?
No. The whole test runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server, stored, or used for anything beyond showing you your result.
What's a good typing speed?
It depends on what you're comparing it with. Our home page calculator uses 45 words a minute as a typical typing speed, from Aalto University's 2018 study of 168,000 typists. The study's own volunteers skew a bit fast, so 45 sits between that and the more commonly quoted 40. Talking, for comparison, averages about 150 words a minute (National Center for Voice and Speech), which is roughly why dictation tends to beat typing.
Is this the same test as the ones on other dictation apps?
It's ours, built the same way most typing tests are: an original passage, the standard 5-characters-a-word maths, and your own result. We're not claiming it matches any particular rival's number, because each one writes its own passage and counts errors slightly differently.
How do I try Voktik instead of typing?
Hold Ctrl + Win and talk, then let go. For longer dictations, double-tap Ctrl + Win, or press Ctrl + Win + Space, and press it again to finish. It's free to try, with 2,000 words a week before you'd need to pay anything.
