Hands-free dictation on Windows with Voktik.
Last checked 1st October 2026
For long emails, documents and AI prompts, you don't have to hold a key. Press Ctrl+Win+Space once, talk for as long as you need, and press it again to finish. Voktik types the whole thing where your cursor is, tidied.
Start, pause and finish
- Click where you want the text.
- Press Ctrl+Win+Space once, or double-tap Ctrl+Win. The bar shows Voktik is listening.
- Talk. Your hands are free to hold notes or a coffee.
- To pause, press Ctrl+Alt+P. Press it again to carry on where you left off.
- To finish, press Ctrl+Win+Space again (or tap Ctrl+Win, if you started with a double-tap). The text arrives a moment later.
Changed your mind? Press Esc, or select Cancel on the bar, to throw the dictation away. You get 5 seconds to undo.
How long you can talk
- Up to 10 minutes in one dictation. In the last 30 seconds the bar counts down, so you're never cut off by surprise.
- If you go quiet for a minute, Voktik stops listening and types what it has.
- If you stay paused for more than 10 minutes, the dictation is kept as Not sent in History rather than pasted into whatever window is open by then. Open History and select Retry when you're ready.
Quieter while you talk
While you dictate, Voktik turns other sound on your PC down, so it's quieter while you talk. You can also have it pause music and videos. Both are in Settings > Dictation > Microphone: Turn other sound down (on to start with) and Pause music and videos (off to start with).
Change the keys
Open Settings > Dictation > Keys and select Change next to Hands-free or Pause and resume. Hold the keys you want and let go. You can switch either one off if you never use it.
A mouse button or a foot pedal as your key is a Pro feature: a mouse's middle button or side buttons, or a pedal that sends F13 to F24.
Tips for long dictations
- Say it in order: what it's about first, then the detail, then what you want to happen next.
- Pause instead of saying "um". The pause costs nothing, and Voktik takes fillers out anyway.
- Say "new paragraph" where you want a break.
- Read it once before you send it anywhere.
FAQ
Is hands-free free?
Yes. Hands-free dictation and the pause key work on the free plan. Long dictations count towards the 2,000 free words a week like any other.
Can I see the words while I talk?
No. Voktik writes it all when you finish, not word by word, so it can tidy the whole thing at once.
What if my Wi-Fi drops during a long dictation?
What you said is kept on your PC, encrypted. Select Retry on the bar, or find it in History, once you're back online.
Why doesn't Esc work while I'm paused?
While a dictation is paused, Esc goes to your other apps as normal. Select Cancel on the bar instead.
